Martin Degville was the frontman of the band Sigue Sigue Sputnik, also known as ‘the Gods of electronic rock and roll’ in the 80’s. Lots of special effects in their videos, costume and music, cleverly concealed their lack of musical talent. Making full use of their huge egos, they managed to score a juicy contract with EMI. Subsequently hit producers Stock, Aitken and Waterman (famous for Mel & Kim, Kylie Minogue, Jason Donovan, Rick Astley) tried to turn Sigue Sigue Sputnik into a commercial chart band for EMI. This failed miserably. Their legend gained the band a cult status though, and they’re still well-known in eighties New Wave and Gothic circles. Martin Degville has been solo for a few years now, but he still plays the Sigue Sigue Sputnik hits. The man is a phenomenon: well in his fifties, his outfits are still stretchy and sparkly, finished off by sky-high stilettos. His current music is dance/disco/electronic with a gay edge.
